Kumana Safari Tours Private wildlife safaris from Arugam Bay & Panama

The prime birdwatching season runs from April to July when tens of thousands of migratory and resident birds nest at Kumana Villu swamp. For leopard and elephant tracking, the dry season between June and September offers the highest visibility around remaining waterholes and lakes.

Kumana's main entrance (Okanda Gate) is approximately 45 to 60 minutes south of Arugam Bay and Panama. We provide convenient private pick-up and drop-off from all hotels, guesthouses, and resorts in Arugam Bay, Pottuvil, and Panama.

All our packages include a private, customized 4x4 safari jeep with elevated 360-degree viewing seats, a licensed local wildlife tracker/guide, fuel, park entrance permit assistance, and chilled refreshments. Full-day tours also include packed jungle breakfast and a traditional Sri Lankan lunch.

Kumana (historically known as Yala East) shares the same thriving wildlife population of leopards, elephants, and sloth bears as Yala, but experiences significantly less vehicle traffic. It provides a peaceful, intimate wildlife encounter without crowded jeep queues.

Wear lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige). Bring a sun hat, UV sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and your camera or binoculars. A light morning layer is recommended for crisp dawn departures.

Each safari jeep comfortably seats up to 6 guests with elevated viewing positions. Even with 2 guests, you get the entire private jeep — no sharing with other groups.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed — these are wild animals in their natural habitat. However, Kumana has a healthy leopard population and our experienced trackers know the park’s trails, waterholes, and animal behavior patterns intimately, giving you the best possible chance of a sighting.

Morning safaris depart at approximately 5:30 AM (pickup from your hotel). Evening half-day safaris depart around 2:00 PM. Full-day safaris depart at dawn (5:30 AM) and return by dusk. Exact pickup times are confirmed when you book.

Yes! Our safaris are family-friendly and we regularly host families with children. Our guides are experienced at keeping younger guests engaged and entertained. We recommend the half-day safari for families with very young children, and suggest bringing snacks, sun protection, and a light jacket for early morning starts.

We recommend booking at least 1–2 days in advance, especially during peak season (April–September). During high season, our jeeps can fill up quickly. For same-day bookings, contact us on WhatsApp and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Yes, you can cancel or reschedule your safari. Please contact us on WhatsApp as early as possible. We understand travel plans can change and will always try to accommodate date changes. Specific cancellation terms will be confirmed at the time of booking.
